FareStart is an organization that helps people with compounding barriers that are preventing people from getting and keeping jobs by hiring people and training them job and life skills, “we transform homelessness, hunger and poverty into human potential.”
Outreach Plan + Action Plan
While talking to my boyfriend, Josh, recommended that I contact FareStart.
They have multiple ways that you can get involved. If you are feeling like you have the time to volunteer you can participate in a few safe ways like delivering meals, making masks or even providing a virtual mock interview for those at FareStart. If we don’t feel like we can go out and volunteer they accept donations, cash, gift cards, hygiene supplies, and clothing are all welcomed.
Donations can be brought or mailed to the FareStart Office at 700 Virginia St. Seattle, WA 98101.
I (Preston) have purchased items off of their Amazon wishlist, which has a range of supplies: clothes, hygiene supplies and accessories such as backpacks. I plan buying items off of Amazon every paycheck selecting items from the wish list until it is empty. Then turning the money that I would have been spending on Amazon into direct donations.
During my breaks between quarters, I will try to use some of that time to volunteer to help FareStart. I think that committing to a regular interval of donating will help keep issues such as food security and helping those less privileged than myself in mind.
What did I learn & how does this project help me understand the importance of “reflection” and “direct action” in intercultural praxis?
This project has helped me understand the importance of reflection in examining the privilege that I have by having to struggle with food security. I also had to reflect on ways that I personally could take action in helping those in need. With direct action I have come to realize that there are so many different ways that one can become involved in providing assistance to those in need. For some it is better to dedicate time helping those in need but if you don't have time you can provide assistance through donations that help provide relief to those in need.
